Antique Percussion Pocket Pistol, or Derringer, made by Henry Deringer of Philadelphia, PA, NVSN, .44 cal., 2'' teardrop-shaped barrel marked ''Deringer/Philadela'' and ''(starburst)/P'' between two platinum bands at breech, has a dovetailed German-silver blade front sight, raised-notch rear sight and floral engraved steel top tang; engraved serpentine lockplate is marked ''Deringer/Philadela''; German-silver furniture includes fillet below nipple bolster, loop trigger guard with pineapple front finial, teardrop buttcap, shield-shaped escutcheon at top wrist, leaf-shaped sideplate, two barrel wedge escutcheons and V-shaped nosecap, all bearing detailed floral engraving; one-piece varnished walnut fullstock with ''bird's head'' butt has checkering in grip area, no provision for a ramrod. Mfg'd ca. 1850s-60s, originally with browned simulated Damascus barrel finish, case hardened lock and hammer. Condition is very good with smooth brown patina to barrel, a darker tone to balance of the steel, and bright German-silver. Stock is smooth and sound with very good checkering and an added varnish finish. All edges, markings and engraving are sharp and clear; action is strong; bore is clean with deep, sharp rifling.
