Apache Hand Woven Olla Basket & Water Vessel.
Early Apache wonderfully hand woven olla basket. This cone shaped basket is made of pleasing Arizona sun bleached split yucca and devils claw fiber skillfully hand woven with selected lengths of desert grasses that are spliced to create these multi colored patterns. No holes, unraveling, or tears are apparent on this Apache olla, measuring 7.25" x 5.5". Antique Apache Tus Pitch Water Bottle circa 1890-1900. This hand woven unique Native American basket is pitch coated, possibly Pinon pine, to create this vessel to carry water. It has two applied loops with a cloth carrying strap. The vintage paper label attached to the bottle reads, "Apache Tus - San Carlos Reservation - ca 1890 1900". The San Carlos Reservation, in southwestern Arizona, was established in 1872 as a reservation for the Chiracahua Apache Tribe. As we would expect with a vessel of this age, the bottle shows some surface cracks and a few small areas where the pitch has come off thru the years, measures 8.75" x 4.25".
