BARNETT ENFIELD ARTILLERY CARBINE.
Cal. 577. NSN. Overall length 39" w/ 23" blued bbl. marked only w/ commercial London provisional proof mark & gauge mark "25" (indicating caliber .577). Case hardened lockplate is marked "BARNETT / LONDON" w/ no other marks & no engraved edging on exterior. Dbl. leaf rear sight. Blued bands. Stock marked deeply on right butt in oval cartouche "BARNETT/ GUNMAKERS / LONDON," on left flat opposite lock "N" & behind trigger guard w/ two crown over 1 marks. Ramrod channel, lower edge of the lockplate & underside of the bbl. bears a "VI" assembly mark. Also in ramrod channel is marked "W BATES" & "EDGP". Underside of bbl. stamped “DEAKIN” but remains of a faint “CRAWSHAY” (William Crawshay, the original bbl. maker. It is known that Isaac Campbell & Co. bought bulk scrap from Crawshay late 1861 through 1862) still visible. Bottom of bbl. also marked "NN" plus "HOLLIS & SONS" (Isaac Hollis & Sons were well known in the Birmingham Small Arms trade & their marking is known on several Confederate blockade run arms). This gun along w/ a handful of others were found in a warehouse in upstate New York in the 1950's. Long marketed as Confederate, it's most likely these guns were made for volunteer unit & never saw Civil War service. Regardless; you will not find a more pristine example of this rare Barnett Carbine. CONDITION: excellent overall. Shows no evidence of having ever been fired or cleaned, w/ bluing & case hardening intact. Wood shows a few dents from handling. Mechanically excellent w/ bright shiny bore. PROVENANCE: Ex George Wray Collection; Atlanta History Center 2005. (01-16578/JS). ANTIQUE. $2,000-3,000.
