BRITISH FUR BUSBY OF THE 18TH HUSSARS WITH PLUMES

& ASSOCIATED TINS. A fine example of an English made fur busby of the 18th Hussars, or Queen Mary's Own, dating to the late 1800s. This busby, and its associated items, belonged to R. S. Grigg. Esq. of the 18th. The busby itself has a fine animal fur covering with a heavy gold bullion cord wrap and a large bullion oval plume holder in the front. The bag is dark blue with a triple gold bullion cord trim and round gold bullion ornament that matches the plume holder. There is a cloth attachment loop on the reverse of the bag to connect to the shoulder. This was historically done to deflect sword blows in earlier times. The interior of the hat has a fine brown leather liner with an 8 tongue top. The liner has the name, "R. S. Grigg" written with a dip pen. The lining is quilted red silk with a large maker's mark enclosed in a crowned garter that reads, "JONES CHALK & DAWSON. SACKVILLE ST MILITARY OUTFITTERS LONDON.W.". The busby is accompanied by its original tin storage case in black with red brush stroke spots as often seen. There is a brass plate on the top of the box that reads, "JONES. CHALK & DAWSON 6TH SACKVILLE ST LONDON.W" & a larger brass plate that reads, "R.S. GRIGG. ESQ. 18TH.. HUSSARS". There is a gilded brass looped ring chinstrap in the bottom of the box. The hat is accompanied by a white & red plume in its original tin box decorated in a similar manner with a brass tag on the top that reads, "HAWKES & CO 14 PICCADILLY LONDON". Another red plume is also in its original tin box similarly decorated with a similar brass tag on the top. Finally, there is a 7 1/2" elongated wool pompom. CONDITION: busby shows very light wear overall. Plumes remain quite solid. Tin boxes remain quite nice with expected dents and scratches to the early painted finish. (02-16707/BF). $1,000-1,500.
