MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 303 Brit. S# 3233. Bbl. 29 1/4". Short lever Martini rifle. Receiver is marked on the right side: "crown (stamped), VR ENFIELD 1913 (crown stamped), EED, broad arrow." Rifle was likely rebarreled from the original 577/450 cartridge to 303 in 1913. Ladder rear sight graduated to 1800 yards. Ramp front sight with blade. Receiver is equipped with a cocking indicator on the right side. Walnut stock set. Buttstock has been cleaned, leaving only "II / I" on the right side. Brass buttplate with trap. Forend has two bands. Rear of the forend has a steel hanger marked with "WD", a broad arrow, and "III". Clamping lower band with a sling swivel. Upper band carries a sling swivel and bayonet bar. Cleaning rod is not present. Rear swivel is at the toe of the buttstock. The loose-fitting handguard is located between the receiver ring and rear sight base. CONDITION: stock set has an arsenal rework finish with moderate wear, staining, and handling marks. Buttstock has several small cracks at the rear of the receiver. There is a 1 1/2" crack on the right side of the butt under the comb. Handguard has notable small cracks and chipping. Metal has been partly restored with an added blue finish. Screw heads, pins, and the cocking indicator are left "in the white." Dark, oxidized bore shows traces of rifling. (24-1406/RW). CURIO. $300-500.
