This is a nice example of a Birmingham Small Arms SHT LE Mk III Rifle, issued to the British military during WW1. There are British proofs throughout. Stock collar marked Crown over G.R, stands for George Rex, referencing King George V. 1914/Sht LE/III. This rifle also retains its original magazine cutoff. This feature, which allows for the loading of single rounds in the chamber while keeping the 10 rounds in the magazine untouched, was eventually eliminated from all of these rifles entirely as being unnecessary, so finding an example that still has one intact is uncommon. Slotted charging bridge on receiver. 25" barrel, one band, metal nose cap incorporating protected front blade sight, sling swivel, bayonet lug, tangent type rear sight numbered 1-20, full length stock with brass disc unmarked, brass butt plate with trapdoor, retains most of blue finish, with friction wear on the bolt, handling wear, turning a brown patina in places, bore is very good/bright, strong rifling, action is smooth, wood is good/sound with three old arsenal wood plug repairs on the comb, toe, and under the rear right receiver. Right chamber stamped "England" over the serial number. Correct green web sling attached marked "H, G, & R, Ltd, 1917. No import marks.
