a 34” barrel and target sights documented as originally belonging to Buffalo Bill Cody and traded to the “Mormon Avenger” Porter Rockwell, S/N 801. The documentation consists of a notarized affidavit dated 20, August 1938 and signed by Gary Whipple who was an early Salt Lake, Utah pioneer gunsmith. He states he acquired Ballard rifle #801 in 1885 and that it had been brought into the state in 1874 or 75 by Buffalo Bill and Wild Bill Hickock who held an exhibition of long range shooting on the site of the capital while promoting a western tour of their show. After the amazing shoot Porter Rockwell traded Cody a span of white horses for this rifle. Whipple states he obtained the rifle in 1885 from Josh Whitman of the Whitman Campbell saloon who obtained the rifle from Horace Rockwell, grandson of Porter Rockwell. The rifle was sold to Stan Jorgeson of Provo, UT by Whipple in 1938 with this document. James Serven obtained the rifle from Jorgeson and sold it to Harold’s Club for their collection in Reno, Nevada.
