British ''Brown Bess'' Type III India Pattern Flintlock Musket, NVSN, with bayonet and buff leather sling, .75 cal., 39'' round barrel, with bayonet lug at top of muzzle (doubles as front sight) and an open-notched rear sight, marked ''JPR/EXR/234'' in one line ahead of rear sight, and ''(crown)/GP'', ''4/(heart)'', ''(crown)/V'', ''11'' (and possibly others) at breech; the large rounded lockplate with a long pointed rear teat, large reinforced cock, pan and frizzen, is marked ''(rampant lion)'' and ''(crown)/5'' ahead of cock and ''1810'' in a curved vertical line at rear; brass mountings including serpentine sideplate, triggerguard (with iron sling swivel at front), buttplate, nosecap, and three fluted ferrules retaining the button-tip ramrod; the English walnut fullstock has long carved aprons on either side of lock, a pinned sling swivel behind the top ramrod tube, and an unidentified circular cartouche on right side. Appears to be in original flintlock configuration, with bushed touchhole. Markings are clear. Condition is very good. Iron parts with a smooth aged ''arsenal bright'' finish, the brass with an aged patina. Stock shows the expected dings and marks of long military use, a gouge at left side under buttplate tang, but solid and with good color and finish. Action is strong and smooth; smoothbore is clean. Bayonet condition matches that of the gun; modern white buff leather sling is fine. This style of Brown Bess with its 39'' barrel was first mfg'd for the British East India Co.; in 1790 it was adopted by the British Army as the ''India Pattern'' musket. Est.: $1,250-$2,250. (Antique)
