South Africa medal with 1879 bar to Pte B. Ellis, 1st (King's) Dragoon Guards 1347. The King's Dragoon Guards were sent to Zululand following the Isandlwana disaster and served in a number of capacities throughout the war. They were present at the discovery of the body of the Prince Imperial on 2 June 1879, were extensively employed on the lines of communication, and one squadron took part in the charge at Ulundi. A detachment of Dragoons captured King Cetshwayo on 28 August 1878.Participants in the Zulu War received this medal without a bar if they remained on the Natal side of the Tugela, or with the bar '1879' if they actually saw service in Zululand. Medal in good condition, no obvious knocks or scratches. Top Clasp is hallmarked. Comes with KDG double headed eagle cap badge.
