CAPTURED HARPERS FERRY MUSKET FROM APPOMATTOX,

FERRY WITH CARTRIDGE POUCH HAVING PROVENANCE TO MAINE CIVIL WAR SOLDIER. Cal. 69. NSN. 42" rnd. bbl. secured by 3 spring retained bands has "V" "P" & eaglehead proofs at breech end. Percussion lock is marked "HARPER'S" "FERRY" "1851". An eagle over "US" is in front of hammer. American walnut stock is iron mounted & bears rack # "18" in front of U.S. marked buttplate which is marked "41". The initials "RMR" are scratched into left side of stock at comb. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Provenance statement certificate of dated July 26, 2021 signed by Richard L. Rhoda, great grandson of Richard Mills Rhoda of Hodgdon, Maine. Richard enlisted October 19th 1864 in Houlton & served in Company B, 1st Regiment Sharpshooters & later Company B 20th Maine infantry. He was at Lee's surrender on April 9th 1865 where family tradition states he took home this musket as a souvenir from the surrender and carved his initials on it. Also accompanying is regulation cartridge box & belt that he would have been issued when entering service. Box & belt retain enlisted lead filled U.S. buckle & box plate. Maker's name "L.S. Baker, New York" is on inner flap of box. CONDITION: musket is good over all, complete & original, iron cleaned to silver gray patina w/ overall scattered pitting. Stock w/ old refinish has lock mortise cracked out at bottom rear of lock. Hammer screw broken off. Mechanically fine w/ clear pitted smooth bore. Cartridge box sound, dry w/ craquelure, broken closure tab. Belt supple, well-worn large tear, dry & cracking. Buckles nicely toned. (01-20303/MGM). ANTIQUE. $2,000-4,000.
