CIVIL WAR CONFEDERATE BOYLE, GAMBLE & MACFEE FOOT

OFFICER'S SWORD. Overall length: 37 1/2". Blade length: 30 3/4". This is a good example of a Boyle, Gamble & MacFee foot officer's sword of the Civil War. The plain blade has a single, wide unstopped fuller. Solid brass hilt with a sharply turned down quillon. 2 Branch guard joining a plain knuckle bow with a large elongated sword knot slot at the top near the pommel. The underside of the guard is clearly marked "BOYLE GAMBLE & MACFEE RICHMOND VA". The relatively plain pommel has a simple Phrygian helmet form. The exceptionally well done grip has been professionally restored with replaced leather and wire to match perfectly. The scabbard is not a product of Boyle, Gamble & MacFee, although it is most definitely of the Civil War period. Often, scabbards that were broken on the battlefield were replaced by what could be found after the battle. CONDITION: blade has a heavily mottled, medium gray patina with evidence of cleaned pitting. The hilt is exceptionally solid and the Boyle, Gamble & MacFee markings are all present. The grip is complete, well matching and quite attractive as restored. The scabbard body is flexed and flaked but remains intact and shows appropriate wear. All mounts are matching and have a deep, dark, aged mustard patina. (02-17884/BF). $6,000-9,000.
