CIVIL WAR CONFEDERATE ST. ANDREWS CROSS FLAG W/

VIRGINIA HISTORY. A very attractive Confederate homemade battle flag in an early 1900s frame. The flag measures approximately 26" x 41 1/2" with approximately 3 1/2" of the flag folded under itself at each end. The wooden frame measures 30" x 37 1/4". This flag is of typical St. Andrews Cross design with 12 stars measuring 2 1/2" in diameter and a single central star measuring 3 1/8" in diameter. The crossed blue stripes containing the stars are 4 1/2" wide and the field of the flag is red. The flag itself exhibits initial handsewn construction that appears to have been strengthened at some point in time with machine sewing. The red field is a looser weave red wool bunting and the stripes are a tighter weave blue wool bunting. The edge sewn white stars are also wool bunting and are completely hand embroidered around the edges. The reverse shows only the white embroidered edges forming the star without a white applied center. The flag is framed with a red cotton cloth backing to mitigate the appearance of mothing. According to oral history from the consignor the flag has an association with the 8th Virginia Regiment and hung for some time in the United Daughters of the Confederacy Chapter associated with the 8th Virginia. It was given to Mrs. Barton Padgett (Polly) and she in turn loaned the flag to the Antioch Baptist Church of Haymarket, Virginia where it hung for several years. The flag was given to Jim Finney of Haymarket by the Padgetts as a token of their esteem and in recognition of his great interest in the Civil War. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: associated paperwork, photos and newspaper clippings of the Padgetts, the Antioch Baptist Church and other items of historic interest to the area. CONDITION: the flag displays wonderfully but does have significant moth damage particularly to the red field. Although the flag is stable in the frame, it would benefit greatly from cleaning and conservation. Initial construction of the flag and a review of the thread used in the sewing, indicates the flag was constructed during the Civil War and likely reinforced some years later.
