CIVIL WAR ERA KNAPSACK OF POSSIBLE CONFEDERATE

MANUFACTURE. This is an extremely interesting knapsack created from a discarded Yankee flour bag. The cotton bag is crafted and sewn with an outer front pocket on the flap covering the body of the pack. The sides of the pack are covered in sewn leather with straps attached. The repurposed bag is cut so that the front flap has the remains of original printing on it. It appears to read, "(NIA)GARA FALLS MI(LL) (NIA)GARA FAL(LS)". Flour mills began appearing near the falls on the Niagara River in 1861. It is quite easy to imagine an enterprising young Confederate lad finding a discarded Yankee flour bag and making it into his knapsack. The knapsack itself measures approximately 16" x 11" x 4". It has bone/horn buttons and has sewn construction throughout with no metal rivets. The bottom strap is connected by a Civil War era knapsack hook. Visually, it could not look more Confederate, but of course there is no proof that this was used by Southern forces. CONDITION: as expected, the cotton bag is heavily stained and worn but the existing letters on the front are quite legible. Leather sides are flexed but remain strong. Straps are partially detached but present. (02-17706/BF). $600-1,000.
