CIVIL WAR IDENTIFIED OFFICER’S TRUNK.

A lg. size, wooden bodied trunk measuring approx. 30" x 16 3/4" x 15 1/2". Trunk has a painted/tarred cloth or leather exterior over wood. There are 5 blue painted metal strips reinforcing the integrity of the trunk. The metal straps are affixed to the trunk w/ brass covered nails. The trunk is closed by means of a lock on the front w/ key & 2 leather straps w/ iron buckles that secure the lid. The left handle is present but the right handle is missing. Family lore states that staining on the inside of the trunk is the bloody uniform of Major Elliot. A paper tag on the right side of the trunk appears to read, “Arsenal Baggage Major G. M. Elliot 102r.wv”. Gilbert M. Elliot enlisted on Oct. 3, 1861 at New York City to serve 3 years. He mustered as a First Lieutenant & on Oct. 31st was promoted to Captain. He became a Major on Oct. 5, 1862 & was killed in action on Nov. 24, 1863 at Lookout Mountain, Tennessee. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: research on Gilbert Malleson Elliot & copies of his Civil War service record from the National Archives. CONDITION: the trunk is functional & shows moderate wear.
