CIVIL WAR MODEL 1861 NAVY RIFLE & BAYONET.

Cal. 69. S# 4082. Bbl. 34-3/16". Standard configuration of the Commander John Dahlgren designed heavy naval rifle based on French pattern 1849 Chasseur. 50.25" overall, iron mounted, long range ladder sight, "VP / eaglehead" proofs, S# 4082 stamped on tang. Lock stamped with large eagle & arms & “U.S. / WHITNEY-VILLE” & "1863" on tail. Often referred to as Plymouth rifles, they were originally field tested on USS Plymouth in 1861. Stock has script cartouche opposite lock "FCW" for inspector Franklin C. Warner and barrel also has his initials. Bayonets were serial numbered to match guns, accompanying bayonet made by "COLLINS & CO / HARTFORD / CONN" mis matched S# "2051". CONDITION: very good overall, complete & original, metal cleaned & varnished, pitted breech, toned to gray patina, markings all discernible, stock sound, discernible cartouche, mechanics fine, pitted worn rifled bore. Bayonet has pitted cleaned blade, fits well. PROVENANCE: Michael E. Bray estate collection. (01-23285/JS). $2,000-3,000.
