Cal. 54, S# 39423. 39" overall, 21" barrel, two position rear leaf sight, tall pinched blade front sight. Conforms to other Civil War carbines of this pattern. This carbine utilized the unique Ambrose Burnside design "ice cream cone" shaped brass percussion cartridge. Marked "BURNSIDE PATENT / MARCH 25TH 1856" on breech & "BURNSIDE RIFLE CO / PROVIDENCE RI" on back action lock. This example shows honest use with saddle wear and right side of stock has been personalized by attachment of brass saddle shield and saddle strap escutcheon. CONDITION: very good overall & all matching, gray metal, marked with inspector initial and "CAST STEEL 1864" worn on top of barrel. Stocks are sound and well fit, 2 good inspector cartouches, old glued repair to wood between lock and tang . Mechanically fine, good rifled bore.
