ISSUE REVOLVER, LT. COL. JOHN R. MAHAN, 14th INDIANA INFANTRY. Cal. 22, S# 5427. Standard configuration with 3.2" barrel, blue & silver finish, varnished rosewood grips. 2-line scroll script presentation on backstrap: "Lt. Col. J. R. MAHAN / 14TH REG. IND V.M." John R. Mahan (1824-1894) from Flemingsburg, KY, entered service at Greencastle, IN June 7, 1861 in 14th Indiana Infantry, promoted to Lt. Colonel May 22, 1862, On August 17, 1863 he was commissioned into Field & Staff of 115th IN Infantry as colonel, mustered out February 25, 1865. Mr. Bricker in his notes states there is another the 14th Indiana presentation engraved identically to Colonel Nathan Kimball. Revolvers must have been given at the same time. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: file of research, and service records, and notes including correspondence from Arnold Chernoff in 1976 over several months working out a trade on this this revolver. CONDITION: good to very good overall, about 10% blue finish found on barrel, frame has traces of silver and protected areas, there is a braised repair to the top strap, mechanically fine, crisp rifled bore.
