SMITH & WESSON ARMY REVOLVER & HOLSTER, LT. JOHN M. TURNER, 2ND RHODE ISLAND VOLS. Cal. 32, S# 18956. Pictured on page 86 of John Hamilton's "Colt's History & Heroes" is one of a few Civil War S&W army revolvers. Standard configuration with 6" barrel, blue finish, varnished rosewood grips. 2-line engraved script presentation on backstrap: "Presented to 2nd Lieut. John M. Turner by the non 'com' / officers and privates of the 2nd RI Vols, Sept 2d, 1863". Revolver is accompanied by original holster also pictured in Hamilton's book. The sword is British all steel hilt decorated with crown over hunting horn, shark skin grip, 33" blade in steel scabbard. Inscribed on scabbard between ring mounts "PRESENTED TO / 2nd Lieut John M. Turner / by the Non Com Officers and Privates / of the 2nd Regiment R. I. Vols." John M. Turner (1834-1912) from Providence RI, entered service September 1861 in the commissary department, promoted to lieutenant September 1863, discharged June 1864, he married June 20th, 1864, living to 1912. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: file of research, and service records, and notes for upcoming article that was never published. CONDITION: fine overall, all matching serial and assembly numbers, retaining 60% original factory blue, retains virtually all original factory varnish. Mechanically fine, bright shiny rifled bore. Holster is sound & supple, missing finial. Sword sound solid, gray/bright steel surfaces, inscription well defined, solid shark skin grip with triple wire wrap intact.
