CLASSIC AUGSBURG PUFFER CIRCA 1585.

Cal. 56 smooth bore. NSN. The 11" half octagon to round iron barrel has cannon turned muzzle, is stamped "H" on top left and right flats at rear and with indecipherable armorer's mark on top flat. The Germanic style wheellock has maker's mark on flat plate. Lock is fitted with sliding pan cover, toggling safety lever at rear and classic dog which shows some scroll engraving. The springs are nicely filed and have bulbous finials and other file decoration. Trigger plate is of iron. Trigger and trigger guard show turned decoration. Stock which extends to muzzle and has a large round bulbous grip is of ebonized walnut. Stock is embellished with inlaid strips of bone and other plates and shaped inlays, all of which show good quality scrimshaw work giving stripes a knotwork appearance. Decorative plates at top of grip and right side behind lock plate show scroll decoration. Bone ramrod thimble depicts the face of a greenman. Others appear at bottom of forestock and under front lockplate screw. Other inlays on left side of stock consist of a coiled sea monster and seated lady with flowerpot. Stock attaches to barrel with bone pins through inlaid bone escutcheons (rear missing). Ramrod of hickory has scrimmed bone top and plain tail. CONDITION: all iron parts cleaned to bright silver. There is some softening of engraving. Stock retains most of its black lacquer finish with some scattered scratches and marks. Bone inlays are stained to tan. Scrimshaw remains clear. Bore is somewhat pitted. Lock appears to be operable and shows very little use. Wheel appears unspun. (01-21221/MGM). ANTIQUE. $10,000-15,000.
