RIFLE CONVERTED BY BERETTA TO 7.62 NATO. Cal. 7.62 NATO. S# 86684. Bbl.23 1/2". These conversions began in 1955 and used a newly manufactured barrel that is 1/2" shorter than the standard 30-06 barrels. This rifle was a very early Springfield made Garand and retains all its original receiver markings. There are no visible import marks on the rifle. The spacer block is metal instead of the plastic used in the US conversions. The barrel is marked on the right side "SIAU 1967 M P"; this marking is the Italian subcontractor who made the barrels. T105E1 aperture rear sight with US knobs. Blade front sight with protective ears. Seal is present on sight screw. Bolt is marked "D-28287 / BMB." Operating rod with notch is marked "6535382 SA" and marked on the right side over magazine well "7.62 mm/2." Barrel has an unmarked flash suppressor, which replaces the gas cylinder lock. Single-slot gas cylinder lock screw. "SA" marked trigger housing, hammer, and safety. Stamped trigger guard. Stock set appears to be thin-shell European walnut, showing a notable figure. The buttstock is marked on the right side of the heel "MT." CONDITION: stock set shows slight wear and scattered tiny handling marks. Metal retains most of its arsenal rework finish with very light wear. The receiver has notable fine pitting in areas below the wood line. Very good, shiny bore with sharp lands. (24-5437/RW). CURIO. $700-1,000.
