COLT HARTFORD NAVY REVOLVER & HOLSTER, 2

CARTRIDGES & CONFEDERATE CURRENCY DESCENDED IN PORTLAND FAMILY. Cal. 36. SN 78243. Standard configuration 3rd model Colt navy, sm. trigger guard, 1-line Hartford address, made 1857 accompanied by scarce navy military flap holster. Unknown Civil War relation had this little group according to family consigning. Pistol is in martial range & does have sub-inspector initials on triggerguard & bbl, the frame also has “US” surcharge, grips are original Colt but not matching s# and no cartouche. Front sight altered to German silver blade. Gun has seen use with heavy holster wear and holster worn through at muzzle end. Two original Colt skin cartridges accompany along with 3 fine Union souvenired Confederate bank notes. Our consignor states: "The pistol & CSA notes belonged to a 4th Virginia cavalry officer, West :Point officer who had taken his issued pistol with him when he joined the Confederacy; he surrendered the pistol to Frank Chamberlain (Joshua Chamberlain's (20th Maine, Little Round Top) brother), at Appomattox. The cartridges were in the pistol, the notes were part of an "after action report," supervised by Frank Chamberlain, friend of my great grand father, that dealt with the Confederate effort to propagandize the war effort to populace.**As an aside, Frank Chamberlain also wrote a report on the significant contribution of women to the support of the Confederate war effort while all the men were at war. That is why the notes are in nice condition & T-42, South strikes down the north; T-64, Stonewall and a battle flag; T-68 artillery. In a letter to George Findell, attorney in Durham, NH, Norm Flayderman authenticated the martial pistol as having been originally assigned to officers at West Point. I have read the letter but Findell is deceased & a copy of his letter is not available”. CONDITION: gun is fair to good, all matching except grips & unnumbered wedge. Iron patina, cleaned, pitting, good sharp address. has traces of rolled scene. Mechanics functional but sluggish, pitted distinct rifling. Holster is good with holes at muzzle and plug. Cartridges very good and complete. Confederate notes are very good to fine and superior to most souvenirs. The 1862 $2 is scarce in fine condition, the $500 is also scarce and all nice examples. (01-20317/JS.) $2,000-2,500.
