FLINTLOCK MUSKET BY MILES. Cal. 69. NSN. John Miles of Philadelphia was issued 2 contracts of 2,000 muskets each in 1798 & 1800. This musket from the first contract has Liberty Cap proof on rear portion of 44" bbl. 1768 Charleville pattern lock w/ reinforced cock, rounded pan, bridled frizzen & feather spring w/ sm. finial marked "MILES" & "CP" at rear. Charleville pattern stock which attaches to stock w/ spring retained bands has initials "AT" carved on left side of butt. No sling loops are present. Button head ramrod appears original. CONDITION: good, original flintlock. Iron parts are dark chocolate brown patina. There is evidence of a rear sight being removed from bbl. Tang & rear part of bbl. show distortion from breech plug removal. There are 2 extra holes in front of lockplate. Stock is sound & retains most of its old, possibly original, finish w/ hand worn patina. Bbl. channel is good w/ no noted repairs. Mechanically good. Pitted bore. A good example of this early Federal period musket. PROVENANCE: The Estate Collection of Gary Parietti. (01-19702/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,500-2,000.
