CONFEDERATE ENGLISH MADE NEW PATTERN 1860
CARTRIDGE POUCH. Pouch measures 8 1/2" x 5” x 3 1/2”. A rare Civil War period English made Confederate cartridge pouch produced by the firm S. Isaac Campbell & Co. of London. This pattern pouch does not have the integral inside cap pouch & gun tool compartment as seen on the Pattern 1859, hence the name “New Pattern”. The box would have been supported by an over the shoulder cross belt passing through a center sewn 2” x 7 1/4" strap guide on the reverse of the box. The strap would have been secured w/ 2 iron roller buckles on the base of the box. The outer flap closes by use of a white buff billet secured over a brass finial on the base of the box. The billet has a cut on 1 side. The cut is thought to have been done by Confederate Ordnance authorities in order to facilitate easier opening & closing of the box. An inner flap closed by means of gravity & was secured by closing the outer flap. There is no tin liner in this box. The box is clearly stamped on the inside of the outer flap, just below the stitching on the closing tab, “S ISAAC CAMPBELL & CO 71 JERMYN ST LONDON” inside a tombstone shaped border. CONDITION: box is in extremely solid condition, showing only light wear throughout. There is a bit of mold on the inside flap. (02-13498-3/BF). $3,500-5,000.
