CONFEDERATE OFFICERS UNIFORM SASH WORN BY
CAPTAIN CUTHBERT H. SLOCOMB OF THE WASHINGTON ARTILLERY. An interesting, early Confederate officer’s sash made from a series of knotted and twisted cords of silk. The sash was worn on the uniforms of Captain C.H. Slocomb serving with the Washington Artillery of New Orleans, Louisiana. The belt of the sash measures 6 1/4" wide and 88” long. At each end, is a 10” open weave section terminated with 7” of knotted tassels. The overall length of the entire sash is 122". The construction of this sash is somewhat out of period for the Civil War. It shows stylistic trends and techniques in general use during the end of the 18th century through the War of 1812, to the 1820s. It would be not a rare occurrence for an earlier family officer's sash to be pressed into service during the Civil War. There is also the possibility that someone working with older techniques made this sash for a family member. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Les Jensen authentication letter. CONDITION: overall, the sash remains quite strong and easily displayable on a uniform. It does show some areas of light to moderate fading. There are a few scattered holes in the open weave fabric. 1 Notable hole in the back of the sash is about the diameter of a quarter. PROVENANCE: Abraham Lincoln Book Shop, Chicago, IL, to legendary collector George Markham in 1957 to the esteemed collection of Don and Judy Polifka in 1987. (02-13429/BF). $1,800-3,600.
