CONFEDERATE PALMETTO PISTOL.

Cal. 54. NSN. Bbl. 8.5". This fine example was from the collection of Dr. Fred Novy, the authority on William Glaze & the Palmetto Armory. He has studied & made notes on over 114 of these pistols & his notes and drawings accompany lot. Model 1842 cavalry pistol made by Wm. Glaze in Columbia, South Carolina in 1852-1853 for the state of South Carolina. Glaze made & delivered 1,000 of these cavalry horse pistols in 1853. Later, during the war for southern independence, these pistols served w/ South Carolina cavalry units in Confederate.
Likely this Palmetto Pistol saw hard service w/ South Carolina Cavalry unit for the Confederacy. Standard configuration, 8 1/2” 54 caliber round barrel: "Wm.GLAZE&CO." on left barrel flat, & "1853" on tang, and "P / V / Palmetto Tree proof" on the breech. Lock has well struck Palmetto Armory Insignia surrounding Palmetto tree & "COLUMBIA / S C. 1852" stamped vertically on tail. Pistol exhibits unique palmetto characteristic punched-out "C" under the bolster. All in all, a superior example that displays well.
