Rare Civil War Era Peabody Single-Shot Infantry Rifle, NVSN, .45 Peabody RF cal., blued 33'' round barrel, with block-blade front (doubles as bayonet lug) and adjustable sliding-leaf rear sights has a ''(crown)/V'' (London?) proof mark at breech; case hardened receiver has matching proof mark over a tiny ''S'' at breech, marked ''Peabody's Pat./July 22, 1862/Man'f'd. by/Providence Tool Co./Prov. R.I.'' on left side, has case hardened side hammer and back-action lock with trigger guard operating lever that drops breech for loading/extraction, and tiny ''C'' and ''E'' marks at bottom front and rear; iron furniture includes two screw-retained barrel bands (lower with sling swivel), curved buttplate with a tiny ''F'' at top screw, slotted tulip-tip ramrod with cannelures; two-piece oil-stained walnut fullstock with sling swivel at lower butt. Mfg'd ca. 1866-71. Condition is near excellent. Barrel retains approx. 85% smooth thinning military blue; receiver, lockplate, hammer and lever show nicely mottled case colors; screw heads show fire-blue. Stock has a sharp oval ''W.C.'' (factory, not military) left-side inspector's cartouche, retains much original ''feathering,'' has minimal storage marks, very nice color and appearance, with minor losses around lockplate and frame. Action is crisp; bore is brilliant with deep rifling. Est.: $900-$1,200. (Antique)
