Civil War Manhattan Series IV Navy Percussion Revolver, #62237, .36 cal., 6.5'' octagonal barrel, with dovetailed post front sight marked with the maker's name, address and 1864 patent date in two lines on top flat; 5-shot round cylinder is rolled with 5 military panel scenes, and marked ''Patented Dec. 27, 1859'' on its rear periphery; case hardened hammer and frame (originally with spring plate to prevent flash-firing across chambers); silver-plated brass gripstraps; one-piece varnished walnut grips. Mfg'd ca. 1859-68. Condition is very good. Steel parts show a smooth brownish patina with strong traces of barrel blue and mottled case hardening colors to frame, lever and hammer; cylinder scene is light (perhaps rolled that way); traces of original silver remain at the front triggerguard bow. Grips retain traces of varnish with highpoint wear and are otherwise smooth. All visible serial numbers match including cylinder arbor and wedge; markings are clear; action is smooth and strong; bore is etched with pronounced rifling. Spring plate is missing, but has the threaded hole in frame. Close cousins to the Colt Model 1851 Navy and 1849 Pocket revolvers, these Manhattan Navys enjoyed much success among officers and men during the Civil War years; examples with 6.5'' barrels are especially desirable. Est.: $500-$750. (Antique)
