Civil War Metropolitan Arms Co. Navy Single Action Percussion Revolver, #5085, .36 cal., 7.5'' octagonal barrel marked on top flat ''Metropolitan Arms Co. New-York'' flanked by small outward-pointing chevrons, 6-shot round cylinder roll engraved with a naval battle scene, silver-plated brass gripstraps, one-piece varnished walnut grips. Mfg'd 1864-66 in a quantity of just over 6,000 revolvers; thus quite rare today, and even more desirable with this Metropolitan barrel marking. Originally with blue and case hardened finishes. Condition is very good retaining no original blue but an overall smooth brown patina (perhaps applied after cleaning), faint mottled case hardening to frame and hammer, and traces of silver on gripstraps; cylinder scene is perhaps 10% visible due to dings on its periphery and probably was lightly rolled to begin with. Grips are smooth and sound with a ding at left toe and a tiny chip out of right toe, fit well and show a pleasing color. Markings are clear; most screw head slots are unblemished; gun remains tight and all parts fit well; all serial numbers match including cylinder, lever and barrel wedge. Action is crisp and sure; bore is shiny with erosion toward breech and well-defined rifling. A scarce American revolver likely reflecting genuine Civil War use but no abuse. Est.: $1,200-$1,800.
