Civil War Era U.S. Model 1860 Enlisted Naval Cutlass, with leather scabbard. The 26'' long blade has a single wide fuller on both sides and is marked at the ricasso area with a faint Ames Mfg. Co. Chicopee, Mass maker''s mark; the other side of the ricasso is marked ''U.S.N.'', ''D.R.'' inspector's mark, and dated ''1862''. Cutlass is 35'' overall in scabbard. Guard has a thin brass knuckle cup that is riveted to the guard bow. At the quillion area there are stamped rack numbers of ''19M'' and ''405''. Phygerian helmet pommel has ''D.R.'' inspector's stamps. Grooved wood grip has remnants of its thin leather covering near the crossguard. Leather scabbard has a row of copper rivets all down the back side. Condition is fair to good, the blade being mostly bright, with some darker rust patina near the tip. Blade is covered in old sticky grease and may clean up to very good. Guard, cup, and pommel have probably been cleaned at some time in the past, having a coating of old grease and a darkened patina. Wood grip is cracked in two places and it is hard to see where the leather covering starts and stops. There is not supposed to be any grip wire wrapping on these swords. Scabbard has a tear most of the way through about 9'' from the tip, and the tip is to Leather shows much age, crazing and cracking, scuffs, and whitish deposits.
