Civil War Smith Percussion Saddle-Ring Cavalry Carbine, #1388, .50 cal., blued 21-5/8'' round-to-octagon barrel with dovetailed blade front and sliding-leaf rear sights; case hardened receiver is marked on its left side ''Manufactured by/Am'n. M'ch'n. Wks./Springfield, Mass.'', ''Address/Poultney & Trimble/Baltimore. U.S.A.'' and mounted with a sling bar and ring; blued steel furniture including single barrel band, loop triggerguard with elongated rear tang, trigger, and carbine buttplate; oil-finished two-piece walnut forend and buttstock. Mfg'd 1861-65; most were issued to Union cavalry regiments. When the latch ahead of the trigger is depressed, the blued steel top spring allows the unique bottom-hinged action to break open for loading and cleaning. Condition is excellent, probably unfired, the barrel retaining 97% soft military blue; the top spring, triggerguard and buttplate with most of their deep blue, and the receiver and hammer showing softly mottled case colors. Stocks are solid and mostly smooth, showing only light marks from use and age; buttstock is marked ''H.J'' on left wrist and ''B'' on right. Action is crisp and tight; bore is brilliant with sharp rifling. Est.: $2,000-$3,000. (Antique)
