Civil War Spencer Lever Action Carbine, later altered to a Heavy Barrel Sporting Rifle, presumably by F. Shilling, #57205, .45 RF cal., 30.5'' heavyweight octagonal barrel with dovetailed blade front and sliding adjustable open rear sights marked ''F. Shilling'' ahead of breech; steel receiver having a Stabler cut-off (for single-shot operation) unmarked but for serial number at breech, with carbine sling bar and ring removed from left side; serpentine lever operates dropping-block action; double set triggers; oil-finished walnut forestock with single barrel key and pewter nosecap, and buttstock with carbine buttplate having sliding door to original cartridge loading tube, with a stud at belly (sling ring missing); plain hardwood cleaning rod retained by two steel ferrules. Condition is very good, the barrel having a smooth bluish-brown patina, the balance of the metal generally gunmetal gray with scattered light discoloration, silvered-out case hardening, and light pitting to hammer. Stocks are sound with light use and age marks, roughness at left side and a 1'' chip out at juncture with receiver; rod is a modern replacement. Action and triggers function; bore shiny with deep rifling. Est.: $800-$1,200. (Antique)
