Civil War U.S. Model 1860 Enlisted Cavalry Sword, by Ames, with Scabbard, 34.5" blade with one wide and one narrow fuller, faint Ames maker mark on ricasso, other side of ricasso marked "U.S., A.D.K., 186(3?)", with three-branch brass guard, pommel marked "A.D.K"; grooved wood grip is missing most all of its leather covering and the wire, quillon is bent down with stamped rack number "40". Steel scabbard with two hanging rings has been bead blasted, faint large number "15" stamped on the drag. Condition is fair, the blade showing age graying, minor pitting, flattening of the edge in the middle (probably to remove edge nicks), and minor rust. The original leather blade washer is present but split. Main branch of the guard is bent, and the outer branch is slightly bent. Brass has a dark uncleaned patina. Wood handle shows several cracks, has only a small remnant of the leather covering, and is missing the wire wrapping. Scabbard has been cleaned and bead blasted to mostly bright, with scattered medium to heavy pitting overall, and two large dents between the hanging rings. Est.: $250-$400.
