''Colt Frontier Six-Shooter'' Model 1878 Double Action Colt Frontier Cartridge Revolver, #5854, .44-40 CF cal., 7.5'' round barrel marked ''Colt's Pt. F. A. Mfg. Co. Hartford, CT. U.S.A.'' in one line, rear of left frame with ''Rampant Colt'' encircled logo, full nickel-plated finish, blued hammer with polished sides in the ''white'', blued trigger and screws; two-piece mother-of-pearl ''bird's head'' grips. Matching visible serial numbers are ''5854'' on bottom of grip ahead of lanyard loop and ''854'' on the loading gate; ''B'', ''I'' and ''8-5-4'' are stamped between each bore on rear of cylinder. Mfg'd 1881. Left side of barrel has the ''Colt Frontier Six-Shooter'' stamping; a corresponding ''44 C.F.'' designation appears in tiny numbers on left front triggerguard bow above the number ''5''. A 2008-dated Colt factory letter accompanying this revolver states that it was shipped to Hartley and Graham, New York City, on June 7, 1881 in a shipment of 10 guns, and confirms all the above features but for the grips, which doubtless were added by H&G at the time. Condition is excellent, retaining approx. 98% original nickel plating having minor losses on both sides of frame at juncture with grips. All markings are sharp; hammer, lanyard and screw heads retain all their original bright, deep fire blue. The thick pearl grips show brilliant translucence and gloss. Action is smooth, tight and positive; bore is mirror bright with defined rifling. Est.: $2,750-$3,750. (Antique)
