Colt Model 1851 Navy Late Third Model Single Action Percussion Revolver, #83741, .36 cal., 7.5" octagon barrel with brass pin front and fixed rear sights, blue and case hardened with brass grip straps, smooth one-piece walnut grips with small brass trigger guard. Mfg'd 1857. Revolver is in very good overall condition retaining traces of original blue finish on the underside of the barrel in protected areas. Barrel has taken on a mottled brown/gray patina with sharp edges, areas of surface erosion at the muzzle, and a desirable Hartford barrel address. Loading lever and frame show traces of muted original smoky case hardening with an incorrect replacement wedge screw. There is light pinprick pitting on the barrel lug and top of forcing cone due to powder and firing. Cylinder retains approx. 70%-80% of a lightly rolled naval battle scene with a crisp Colt patent line and legible engagement date. Five of the six safety pins remain with the sixth hammered flat, and the rear of the cylinder shows light pitting and small dents from use. All of the nipples are in good condition. Gun shows all matching visible serial numbers, including the arbor and wedge. Frame shows a sharp "COLTS PATENT" on the left side with numerous Colt acceptance marks, good screw heads, save for a buggered frame screw ahead of the trigger guard. There are light dents and mars around the wedge on the right barrel lug from rough disassembly. Brass straps and small trigger guard retain approx. 5%-10% of the original silver plating in and around the trigger guard, with the brass taking on a pleasing taffy patina. Wood grips are in very good condition with considerable original finish and fit very well, showing small mars and compressions consistent with carry and use. Action is crisp and the timing is very good; bore is fair with roughness, light pitting and defined rifling. A desirable Hartford marked Navy with considerable cylinder scene. Est.: $2,000-$3,000.
