The 'Frontier'. Manufactured 1878, first year of production. Barrel with one-line dual "Hartford & London" address reading COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. CO HARTFORD, CT U.S.A. DEPOT 14 PALL MALL LONDON. "B over 90" proof marks under barrel and "P" with numbers marked at the rear of each cylinder flute. There is no "Rampant Colt" logo stamped into the frame, as this revolver was made before they started using that marking, and there is also no caliber marking stamped onto the barrel. The trigger guard is marked on the left side with a small 45 CAL / B, indicating that it was made for the early .45 "Boxer cartridge, also known as .450 Adams. No broad arrow or War Dept. marking observed but It is marked on the left frame with CS over D marking. This marking is not fully understood. The known Tranter revolvers that were accepted are marked CS over A and there are reports of a few being marked CS over B. It's thought the CS could stand for something like Commercial Supply or Civilian Service. No one really knows. Serial number is matched on the heel and loading gate. Lanyard ring intact. The bore is good/bright, strong rifling, some very light areas of pitting, action is crisp, the circular side plate may be a old replacement or has been buffed, the checkered wood grips are good with handling wear. The finish has turned a brown patina with some scattered pitting, mostly on the left frame. The barrel address is a little feint but readable.
NRA Condition-Good. Antique Firearm.
