This is a Colt single-action army "artillery' revolver that once belonged to Rex Allen. Rex Elvie Allen Sr. (December 31, 1920 – December 17, 1999), known as "the Arizona Cowboy", was an American film and television actor, singer and songwriter; he was also the narrator of many Disney nature and Western productions. For his contributions to the film industry, Allen received a motion pictures star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1975. Allen was born on a ranch in Mud Springs Canyon, forty miles from Willcox in Cochise County in southeastern Arizona. The revolver has been 'movieized' by motion picture studios, shows an overall reblued finish, original black powder U.S. barrel, frame, cylinder, hammer, backstrap and triggerguard with 1950's aluminum ejector rod housing and replaced ejector rod, 1950's faux stag grips. The revolver features a 5.5" barrel, 'U.S.' .martially marked frame numbered 1646, manufactured 1874. the triggerguard is numbered 98233 with "G" sub inspector stamp, cylinder is stamped " 0014, P and D.F.C." (Feint), backstrap shows no serial number but appears to be black powder era, the one line barrel address is feint and only partially visible, the front blade sight is a replacement and rounded, the trigger has been serrated. The bore is very good, strong rifling, the action is crisp/smooth, the grips are very good with no cracks and the old reblued finish is about 70% with handling and holster wear. The revolver has outstanding provenance, which includes a 1993 dated letter signed by Mr. Allen that states he did own the Colt serial number 1646 and used it personal appearances and parades. A letter from noted collector Donald Ross stating he verified the signature the letter with the Rex Allen museum and the he purchased this gun from High Noon Auctions, letter id dated 2006, a 1950's comic book with full color cover showing Allen unloading a SAA revolver very similar to this one, a signed B&W 8x10 photo of allen wearing a SAA with stag grips, three additional photos showing him wearing a SAA with stag grips. Also included is a vintage button with his image. Comes in a 24" x 18" red lined, glass topped wooden display case with the paperwork.
