Colt U.S. Artillery Single Action revolver, frame S/N 4957 (Custer range), 5.5” barrel, wood grips, in overall good to very good condition displaying an even grey patina to metal surfaces, crisp action, good markings,overall good grips with an old chip off the front right toe and some old hammering to the bottom of the grips. According to Kopec and Fenn’s “Colt Cavalry & Artillery Revolvers . . . a Continuing Study”, this serial numberfalls within the prime Lot 5 (S/Ns 4500-5504), the majority of which were sent to the Seventh Cavalry at Fort Lincoln in June, 1874. Further, the Study states “Very few documented or positively-associatedSeventh Cavalry Colts are known. Those from Lot Five are serial numbers 4507, 4553, 4597, 5100, 5128 and 5147. Other Colt Army revolvers r4om Lot Five with strong, but less positive Seventh Cavalry-association, are4729, 4949, 4955, 5133, 5180, and 5416” (see page 261 of above-referenced work).
