Civil War Confederate Griswold and Gunnison Brass Frame Percussion Navy Revolver, #1460, .36 cal., 7.5'' round barrel with desirable rounded upper lug contour and tiny brass pin front sight, barrel lug with distinctive lower curve, bore with correct 6-groove right-twist rifling. Signature G&G brass (or bronze) frame (with reddish tone in protected areas due to high iron content), brass triggerguard and backstrap, one-piece oil-finished walnut grips. Barrel is unmarked and shows a period weld repair just ahead of forcing cone (perhaps where a rear sight dovetail was filled in). The 1.75'' long, six-shot cylinder shows twist lines, correct for this model, being made from steel bar wrapped around a mandrel, and shows remains of safety pins between each nipple; no serial number is evident on cylinder, likely being obscured by age pitting. Cylinder arbor shows old repair and crude finishing where it apparently was once broken. Triggerguard bow is thick and shows squared curves, and grip butt has significant upward acclivity, both again typical for the type. The serial number ''1460'' is stamped at front frame bottom and bottom of barrel lug; a ''3'' is stamped on right barrel lug and behind front triggerguard screw; a chisel-cut Roman numeral ''XXV'' benchmark and a cryptic backward ''R'' inspector's mark appear on right side of grip strap under the wood grip; ''EE'' is stamped on right rear of frame, and two small dots are punched on either side of rear frame above the latter mark; loading lever is marked ''00'' on lug. Condition is fair for this extremely rare type, showing no original finish, and with deep (but long ago cleaned) pitting evident on barrel, lever and cylinder; scrapes and scars from severe wartime use to aged brass frame; barrel and cylinder arbor with the above mentioned weld repairs; lever fits loose but latches securely; four cylinder nipples replaced; bottom butt screw (and perhaps one or two others) an old replacement; barrel wedge is missing. Grips show an old break repair to top left side, the expected scars of hard military use, and are somewhat undersized (once again typical for this model). Action is tight and functions but cylinder does not revolve; bore is good with definite rifling. An extremely rare (in any condition) Civil War Confederate-made revolver, of which only about 3,700 were produced. Est.: $8,000-$10,000. (Antique)
