DAN POPPEN COLLECTION OF CIVIL WAR BRASS
CARTRIDGES. There are 131 cartridges in this lot. Approx. 45 are excavated. Many of these excavated cartridges are very rare, in good condition as the corrosive powder in the ground ruins so many. Most excavated cartridges here appear solid, though some examples excavated brass & lead bullet "married together". Bullets range from the smallest 5mm pinfires to 10 Ga. RF shotgun slug. In between there are many rarities including rimfire 58 cal., numerous variations of most every teat-fire, Maynards, including rare Confederate mfg. 35 cal. Maynard variants & many more. Prospective bidders should inspect this lot as there are many rare variants & only one of these cartridges has identifying tag which states 46 cal. RF for Remington split breech carbine. There are 23 paper/organic wrapped balls which all appear different. We can identify several varieties of U.S. carbine bullets including 64 cal. Hall. There are several 58 & 69 cal. which are not known as Mr. Poppen had no notes on these. The only way to tell is x-ray in some cases, regardless, they are all different w/ most in nice condition. CONDITION: most of the paper cartridges are good to very good overall, though fragile as most survivors are. There are a 2 cartridges that are powder w/ no balls & another is a paper wrapped pack of caps that would accompany a paper wrapped pack of 10 cartridges. Brass cartridges of non excavated variety are very good to fine. Excavated cartridges are good to very good overall & as noted need to be viewed by prospective bidders as there are very scarce variants not described. PROVENANCE: Estate Collection of Dan Poppen. (02-13449-2/JS). $3,000-5,000.
