DESIRABLE U.S.G.I. BRINGBACK MAUSER 42 CODE
"1940" DATE P.08 LUGER SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL WITH ORIGINAL CAPTURE PAPERWORK. Cal. 9x19mm. S# 2156a. Bbl. 4". P.08 Luger semi-automatic pistol mfg. by Mauser during World War II. The bbl. extension is marked "1940" over the top of the chamber, with Mauser Eagle/655 arsenal proofs stamped on the right. Metal components exhibit a salt blue finish overall. 3/4 of the bbl. extension exhibits a plum colored finish. This plum coloring appears to be 100% correct, and occasionally occurred as the result of varying steel qualities, heating treatments, and bluing solutions, as mentioned on page 1137 of The Borchardt & Luger Automatic Pistols, by Dr. Geoffrey Sturgess and Joachim Gortz. Frame is mounted with 2-piece checkered wood grips. Nearly all numbers are matching and include the frame, takedown lever, sideplate, trigger, safety lever & bar, hold-open latch, bbl., bbl. extension, trigger bar, breechblock, extractor, firing pin, toggles, as well as the rear toggle pin. Grips are mismatched, but match each other. MAGS: 1 8-rd. blued "fxo" mag., with black plastic bottom. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: original capture paperwork that lists this example by S#, indicating that this pistol was brought back by Herbert Hoffman on September 9th of 1945. The backside of the capture paperwork is dated "5/3/64" and reads "I hereby transfer ownership of this Luger pistol #2156 to Dr. c.a. Worthen Jr. of Lymefield, mass" above Herbert's signature. Pistol is also accompanied by Guns & Ammo Luger mini-manual. CONDITION: metal components retain the majority of their original factory blue finish, exhibiting a couple of spots of mild wear, some light to mild edge wear, as well as scattered spots of light surface oxidation, which are primarily present on the grip straps. Left side of muzzle exhibits some light pitting. Bright bore, exhibiting consistent mild pitting, while retaining well defined rifling throughout. Grips show some smoothing, as well as some scattered nicks to the diamonds, but otherwise remain sturdy and serviceable. A nice example of an always desirable Mauser P.08 Luger with capture paperwork. (24-4861/MLW). CURIO. $1,500-2,500.
