Desirable Whitney-Burgess-Morse lever action 2nd Type rifle, .45-70 caliber, 28” octagon barrel, S/N 877, blued finish, wood stocks in overall good to very good condition displaying a plum brown patina to the barrel and brown patina to receiver with areas of original muted blue finish; crisp action, good markings and good bore. The forend is in overall very good condition; the butt stock shows an old well-done repair at the wrist and has been re-finished long ago. Per Flayderman’s Guide to Antique American Firearms (5J-075), less than 3,000 of this gun were manufactured between 1878 and 1882 (Rifle, Musket and Carbine) of which only approximately 1,500 were Sporting Rifles.
