EARLY 19th CENTURY GERMAN HUNTING SWORD.
Overall length: 28". Blade length: 22". Flat blade has a 6 3/8" false edge and a tiny fuller just under the spine. The blade is etched over the first 4" with various geometric motifs. One side has a running stag, and the other side has a running bore. Gilded brass hilt with exceptional downturned guard featuring 3 dogs attacking a wolf. The crossguard has a central stag & lion. The downturned quillon is scroll-embellished as is the knuckle bow. The pommel features a deer, dog, & stag, and a side panel on the grip features animals & knotted geometric motifs. The grip itself is molded horn. Scabbard is gilded brass mounted leather. The mounts are embellished with deer and a fox. CONDITION: the blade shows some original factory polish. The hilt retains most of its original gilded finish. The horn grip has a central crack but no losses. The scabbard is flaked but complete. PROVENANCE: From the estate collection of Thomas J.
