NUMBER 18. Cal. 10 Ga., 2 7/8". S# 18. Bbls. 30 5/8" of fine pattern Damascus are engraved "D. KIRKWOOD, BOSTON" on slightly raised concave game rib. Bbl. flats are stamped w/ S# & bottoms of bbls. w/ Kirkwood's distinctive proof. This robust early example of Kirkwood's boxlock gun features his typical square shouldered dolls head rib extension w/ sliding bolt combined w/ another bolt engaging rear lump, operated by a sm. top lever. Automatic safety shows relief engraved "LOCKED" & "DANGER" through window in button. Action also incorporates his cocking system & patented pin type cocking indicators at rear of fences. As Kirkwood was an action filer, he put his skills to work in the unusual & distinctive filed flutes on fences. Action is engraved w/ sprays of scroll w/in line & geometric borders. "D. Kirkwood" is on each side. Trigger guard is also scroll engraved. Very nicely marbled & lightly fiddle figured dense European walnut rnd. knob pistol grip stock measures 14 1/2" over what appears to be original 3/4" thick horn buttplate w/ fancy second piece Widow's peak. Side panels w/ sm. drop points are also embellished relief carved lobes. Checkering of semi fancy pattern is at grip. Matching splinter forend has inset horn tip & fancy pattern checkering. Bore diameters: left - .770, choke .000 (cyl), right - .760, choke .002 (cyl). Wall thickness: left - .041, right - .044. DAC: 2 1/8". DAH: 3 9/16". Neutral Cast. LOP: 14 1/2". WEIGHT: 9 lbs. 11 oz. CONDITION: good, as partially refinished. Bbls. are mostly gray patina, w/ traces of original almost black finish. Action has traces of original case color but is mostly gray brown & frosted. Stocks refinished w/ a few subsequent marks, checkering recut. Bores are shiny over considerable pitting. Action is tight. A sm. chip of wood is missing under right cocking indicator nipple. Part of forend tip repaired w/ epoxy. An interesting example of some of Kirkwood's earliest work. Most noted S#'s are over 900. (01-17163/MGM20). ANTIQUE. $1,500-2,500.
