INCISE CARVED KENTUCKY RIFLE. Cal. 45 smooth bore. NSN. Bbl. 38". 3 3/4" High & 1 1/4" wide buttstock. Elegant engraved fancy script "JA" signed oct. to rnd. bbl. Left hand side of the butt is nicely incise carved in front & back of the cheekpiece. 4 Piece brass patchbox w/ a nicely engraved door. The patchbox finial has 1 piercing. The 4 1/2" long brass toeplate is also finely engraved, as is the 2 screw sideplate. The early handmade flintlock appears to be original flint but later addition as bbl. is reconverted. The stock is curly maple. Jacob Albright worked in Haines Township, Northampton County (Centre County today). Jacob was the son of Jacob Albrecht who worked in York County. CONDITION: good to very good overall, lock is fairly well fit but still has gap around perimeter, wood insets between lock & tang & just forward of frizzen replacing burnout. Shows signs of heavy use, but all features, including the carving & signature on bbl. are clear & distinct. Mechanically functions but set trigger screw is missing & takes extra effort to set. Smooth clear bore w/ areas of pitting. PROVENANCE: Collection of Dr. John Persing. (01-19638/RG). ANTIQUE. $3,000-5,000.
