EARLY PARRYING DAGGER REFERRED TO AS A MAIN
GAUCHE. Overall length: 17”. Blade length: 10 3/4". The parrying dagger was an important ancillary arm utilized in European Renaissance swordplay. It was most often held in the left hand giving rise to its synonym “the left hand dagger”. In reality the dagger would be carried in the offhand, as the dominant hand would wield the rapier. A gentleman’s attire was not complete with solely a rapier, but fashion & safety would command the use of a main gauche. This example has a plain blade with a raised medial ridge. The iron hilt has a downturned guard with a central ring. The dagger is topped with a lobed melon shaped pommel and wire-wrapped grip. Leather covered wood scabbard with iron mounts. The top mount has an elongated frog stud to aid in carrying the weapon. CONDITION: blade has a mottled gray patina. The remainder of the hilt has a dark patina with some areas of oxidation. The scabbard body is a bit shrunk but remains solid. The mounts have an oxidized gray finish. (02-19556/BF). $800-1,200.
