EARLY SERIAL NUMBER CONFEDERATE SPILLER & BURR
REVOLVER. Cal. 36. S# 119. Bbl. 6 11/16". Attractive example of the rare Atlanta and Macon, GA made brass framed revolver. Twist and casting flaws are prominent in cylinder of this revolver. Brass framed revolvers of Georgia are unique and have “twisted iron” cylinders where steel was unavailable. There is article linked published December 2020 Arms Heritage explaining chronology of manufacture of Spiller & Burrs. Based on article serial number 119 was probably an early Atlanta gun manufactured August 1863, reissued Macon due to field failure. The four “O” stamped internally on grip frame are thought to mean “over stamp”, seen on several Macon reissued revolvers. Possibly this was originally serial number “9” with added numbers (overstamped) seen on a few other Macon reissues. CONDITION: gun is good overall as restored. Brass frame has braised repair where cracked just behind hammer on integral brass backstrap. Serial number 119 is found on frame under trigger guard, on right side of backstrap frame at base, and externally on buttstrap. A cryptic “O” is stamped on backstrap frame four times right and left on either side at base. As noted, “C.S.” government acceptance is stamped on right side of frame but a gash obscures part of the “S” as can be seen in photos. 6 11/16" Barrel is heavily filed and cleaned, refinished and restored, a partial SN “11” can be seen on bottom with restored brass pin sight. Cylinder is also heavily pitted and refinished. Trigger guard is restoration and unserialized as in loading arm. The cylinder pin is original but numbered 316. The stocks are well fit and in fine condition with correct Spiller & Burr profile but are fine restorations. Mechanically functionable with discernible rifling in pitted bore. PROVENANCE: Museum of Historical Arms, Miami, FL 1976; Cecil Anderson, Conley GA; Bill Seymore collection. (01-18867/JS). ANTIQUE. $10,000-15,000.
