& FIELD OFFICER'S SWORD FROM EXCELSIOR BRIGADE. Higher grade than most 1850s with spiral fluted silver grip with fancy double twisted silver wire, engraved scabbard mounts with most unusual presentation engraved on throat: "PRESENTED TO / LIEUT. C. DUSENBERY / 86 NYV / by / Lieut. Col. Thos. Holt / 1st Regt. Ex. Brigade”.
Charles H. Dusenbury (1834-1891) Enlisted as private on 4/20/1861 into Co. "F" 70th NYV [1st regiment Excelsior Brigade], promoted corporal 6/20/1861, sergeant 9/15/1861, 1st sergeant after Gettysburg, re-enlisted as veteran 12/30/1863, transferred to accept commission 6/22/1864 as lieutenant Co. "G" 86th NYV when sword by his old company “F” commander Thomas Holt who went on to be colonel in the Excelsior brigade, discharged 7/8/1865.
CONDITION: Sword appears as found with 32" blade retaining most of its factory polish and luster, patriotic panels are crisp as is maker etched “EMERSON / & / SILVER / TRENTON / NJ”. Brass hilt & scabbard mounts have strong traces of gold wash, scabbard body retains much of its original blued finish. Sword is tight retaining original protective washer. Scabbard sound well fit, dents in drag, quillon bent in. (02-17912/JS). $3,000-4,000.
