EVE-54 PRESENTATION SWORDImportant and fine Mexican War presentation sword inscribed, “Presented by the citizens of Delhi to Lieutenant Frederick Steele of the 2nd United States infantry for the gallant and conduct by which he distinguished himself in the late battles before the city of Mexico”. The sword is also finely hand engraved on the reverse with battle scene of American forces in Mexico. The hilt is cast with figure of Roman soldier and the balanceof the scabbard is finely and richly scroll engraved. The blade shows etching of eagles and scrolls and is in excellent condition. The sword shows 50%-60% gold gilt over silver. Contained in Moroccan leather covered fitted case. The case is marked in gilt book binder letters, “Ball, Tompkins, and Black manufacturers, No 247, Broadway, New York”. The sword measures 40 ½” overall with a 32 ½” blade. Several letters of correspondencebetween Eric Vaule and Bill Guthman (Guthman Americana) concerning this sword are included along with a huge research binder on the history of Frederick Steele.
