EXCEEDINGLY RARE REMINGTON HEPBURN No. 3 LONG
RANGE CREEDMOOR RIFLE, SERIAL NUMBER 2. Cal. 44 Remington Creedmoor. S# 2. The cartridge fired by this rifle was designed specially for match shooting and was named after the famous Creedmoor Long Island New York rifle range. The cartridge was not very popular, and rifles in this caliber are quite scarce. This example has 34" half round half octagon bbl. with Remington name and address on top flat. Caliber (44 2 6/10) is stamped on bottom. Serial number is also on bottom hidden by forend. Bbl. is fitted with wind gauge spirit level front sight. Case hardened side lever Hepburn single shot dropping block action is fitted with single trigger and has no factory markings or patent dates, except for serial number "2" on bottom tang. Round knob pistol grip buttstock of slightly marbled European walnut measures 14 5/8" over checkered hard rubber buttplate. A long range back position vernier sight is affixed to rear of comb. Checkering at grip is of semi fancy crenallated pattern. Long forend with matching checkering has hard rubber tip. CONDITION: fine, bbl. retaining 60-70% original blue with high edge wear and overall freckling. Action retains most of its original case color which has considerably faded to grayish brown. About 60-70% original blue remains on breech block and hammer. Stocks retain most of their original oil finish with slightly raised grain and fair scattering of marks, mostly minor with a few deeper gouges on right side of butt. Checkering is lightly worn. Bore is very fine; shiny with strong rifling throughout. Mechanically good. There is a 1/2" old stable stress crack at right side of top tang which extends into checkering. Sights are good and complete. Possibly a once in a lifetime opportunity to acquire a rifle of this type. This rifle is featured on page 170 of "The Guns of Remington" by Howard Madaus & page 159 of "Remington Hepburn" by Tom Rowe. (01-21584/MGM). ANTIQUE. $20,000-30,000.
