This fine and rare gun was made by the Sharps Rifle Company of Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1879. Frank Seller reports in his book "Sharp's Firearms" that there was only 230 of this configuration made. Factory research indicates that this rifle was shipped on December 8, 1879 to the magazine "The Independent". Rifle is serial numbered 6649 and is what is known as a second generation according to Sharps Firearms model 1878 "Borchardt Patent" Rifles and other Models Volume III by Ray Marcot, Ron Paxton and Edward Marron Jr. "The Independent" was a monthly magazine published from 1848 to 1928 supporting Congregationalism views. During the Civil War it was supported by Henry Ward Beecher, famous pastor raising money for slave guns known as "Beecher's Bibles" and Harriett Beecher Stowe, famous abolitionist who wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin. Unclear on who the exact purchaser was but the magazine is known to have contained many ads and during this time the Creedmoor Rifle Range was in its heyday and of close proximity. The Superbowl of its time. This rifle features a 34" blued round tapered barrel in 45 - 4/10 caliber with Spirit level "New Model" Wind gage front sight with no rear sight provision. Barrel is marked "Old Reliable" and with Sharps Bridgeport address. Case-hardened action with plain single knurled finish trigger and walnut wood action panels. Tang is fitted with a long range Vernier sight with staff measuring 5-1/4" from tip to pivot point. Stock is a fancy grained walnut which might be Italian in origin, which was an option at the time. Pistol grip configuration with "V" checkered grip and raised "dish" design behind action. Butt stock is fitted with "Heel" sight mount and "SRCO" hard rubber butt plate and hard rubber grip cap. Matching checkered forearm with ebony rounded tip and case-hardened tenon escutcheon. Rifle measures 50" overall and weighs exactly 10 lbs., which conforms to specific Creedmoor weight standards. CONDITION
Retains 95% original blue with some freckling near the breech due to poor storage. 95% original vivid case colors. 95% varnish with light handling marks possibly lightly cleaned with sharp checkering. Excellent bore and mechanics.
